WIDOW Manis Mat’s sleep is cut short whenever it rains at night. For the past few years, the 75-year-old woman has been waking up and frantically shifting her belongings around the house to prevent them from getting wet. Earning a meagre income barely enough for herself, Manis cannot afford to repair her leaky roof. And due to constantly getting wet, the wooden floors of her 50-year-old home in Kampung Kunci Air 12 near Teluk Intan is also rotting. Coming to know of her plight, Yayasan Bina Upaya recently offered to rebuild Manis’ house under its ‘Projek IBU (Infra Bina Upaya)’. “The state government has approved a RM30,000 grant for my house to be rebuilt. “I will be staying with a neighbour while work is carried out,” she said happily. The good news was made even sweeter when Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir personally handed over the letter of approval to Manis last week. “I am illiterate and did not know that such assistance existed. “I am so grateful to those who have opened their hearts to extend such help to me,” she said.
